For me the defining feature of this flight simulator is that the player has access to all the US Marine aviation assets in the region and thus can do most anything in terms of missions. This is something that is lacking in DCS World and which differentiates the CAP2 from the Strike Fighters 2 series and Falcon BMS. It is also a feature that didn't exist in the original Combat Air Patrol back in 1993.
At this point the game is still very much a prototype but there is a steady stream of updates coming out. These include fixes, updates to the campaign, missions, weapons, aids to navigation, campaign scenario maps, graphical upgrades, new aircraft and more. In terms of the campaign there is not currently a full campaign story but there are a number of missions set on the Persian Gulf and some that take place in the UK. These include counter-terrorism missions, a mission to protect a US Navy amphibious ready group carrying a US Marine unit to Iraq, and a number of dogfight missions. There are also a variety of air to air missions including air to air combat (which are based on missions in the Gulf), air to ground and air to air escorted missions. The campaign also includes a number of ground attack missions.
The Harrier version (in service from 1990 to 2017) can be flown by the player from both the LPD and the land-based version (VIPER) and can be used in both dogfight and air-to-air scenarios. The game also includes the player getting access to a variety of other aircraft, including the F-5Es (US Navy, in service from 1979 to 1991), F-15s (US Air Force, in service from 1977) and F/A-18s (US Navy, in service from 1982). The game also includes the player being able to capture and command a range of enemy aircraft including the Mirage F-1, MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-29, MiG-35, Sukhoi SU-27 and Su-24. There is also the player being able to fly a variety of air-to-ground missions from fighters to bombers. Again, these can be flown from both the Navy and Air Force versions.
